Last year I took a Spanish Literature course at a community center in Torreon. My teacher was a self-proclaimed atheist. He frequently mocked God and the Bible in class. When he found out I was a Christian and my husband a missionary, he toned down his jokes, but continued to deny anything related to Christ and salvation. Then one day he came into class with heavy eyes. A good friend and coworker of his had died unexpectedly that morning. Soon the discussion in class turned to life, death, and how quickly things can change.
The professor rubbed his eyes and looked out the window. Then he spoke words that still echo through my mind. He said, "To be honest, death scares me more than anything else. I'm terrified of it."
The atheist couldn't bear the thought of death. He didn't know what would come after it and didn't want to find out.
Isn't that why we work as missionaries in other countries? Isn't that why we need to talk to others no matter where we are? There is an urgency to spread the Gospel. Life here on Earth doesn't last forever; eternity does.
This Easter season, we rejoice in knowing that Christ rose from the dead. We know that our Redeemer lives, and that we too will live with Him in heaven.
Pray for opportunities to speak to people like my professor. Even those that deny Christ often fear death and its results. Through the Holy Spirit, we can spread the message and bring hope to those who fear the afterlife.
