John Raasch arrived in Mexico in July 2006. He taught English classes in Monterrey until December. Then in January 2007 he headed south to Pachuca. He is currently teaching English classes as an outreach tool there. In the following interview, John tells us about his life as a WELS Kingdom Worker in Pachuca.
Can you tell us a little about Pachuca?
Pachuca is a medium sized city in Central Mexico. The people here are friendly but reserved. We are about an hour outside of Mexico City and alot of people commute from Pachuca to Mexico City every day. The weather is mild compared to the midwestern weather I'm used to, but it's pretty difficult without indoor heating/air conditioning.
How many classes do you teach each week?
I teach 6 classes that meet twice a week. I also teach one class on Saturdays. The average attendance is about 7 students per class.

How have you grown through this experience?
I have learned a lot from my experience here. I have grown spiritually and my attitude has changed. It is incredible to see how people live here with so much less than people in the U.S. and sometimes they are happier. I also see all of the work that goes into a mission and what types of odds we're working against.

What has been the greatest benefit you received from being a WELS Kingdom Worker volunteer?
I have gained valuable life experience, new friends and time in another culture that I would not trade for anything. The greatest benefit I have gained is the opportunity to share the gospel. It's truly a pleasure to teach people about Jesus and see how they react to knowing that their sins are paid for in full.
