During our years in Mexico, we've enjoyed learning about the country, its history, people, and geography. Below you'll find some basic information that I've gathered about Mexico.

Population – 107,449,530 (2006 estimate)

Capital – Mexico City

Number of States – 31 States and 1 Federal District

Religious Affiliations
Roman Catholic – 89%

Literacy rate – 92.7%

Population below poverty line – 40%
The bottom 40% of the population share only 11% of the wealth
Many families live in total poverty and children are compelled to work on the streets in order to supplement the family income.

Languages – Mexico has no “official” language. Spanish is the most common language spoken. Additionally, over 60 other languages, mostly indigenous, are spoken.

Approximate geographical area – 1/5 of the size of the United States, or three times the size of Texas

Distance from Tijuana (west coast) to Cancún (east coast) - 3,283 miles

Minimum wage – 40 pesos per day (about $4 per day)

Unemployment – officially 3%, but a more realistic figure is closer to 25%
