August 3rd was an exciting day in Torreón! On that Sunday, Héctor Niño (pictured on left) was confirmed at the congregation El Redentor (Redeemer), where English classes have been offered this year. Héctor is the first person from the English program at El Redentor to be confirmed.
Héctor was not only the first person to be confirmed; he was the very first person to come to church to ask about the English program. Before classes started up, volunteers passed out many flyers in the neighborhood and placed an ad in the newspaper about the program.
Héctor came to the church, where English classes would be held, to find out more. He found Pastor Esequiel Sánchez (in the above picture, on the right), who told him about the program. Pastor Sánchez also invited him to church. Soon Héctor was coming on Sundays and studying the Bible during the week. After studying for five months, he asked to become a member.
God wants us to use our gifts to serve in the church, and Héctor has found a way to do so right away. Héctor is a Spanish and Latin grammar professor. Starting in a few months, he will teach a grammar class to our students at the seminary in Torreón.
Héctor may be the first student to be confirmed, but he won't be the last. Every Sunday, a number of a English students show up for worship. As Pastor Sánchez says, "Now we have the fish in the pond; may the Lord teach us to fish!"
