Mexico's Independence Day

Yesterday, September 16th, was a big holiday here: Mexico's Independence Day. Many schools and businesses closed down for the day. As a whole, the city was quiet.

The night before, though, there was much celebrating. As a country, Mexico turns into a festive party on the night of the 15th. The highlight is the Grito, which occurs at 11 pm in the evening. At this time in Mexico City, the president comes out to the main square and shouts, "Viva México!" (long live Mexico!). The crowd responds by repeating the phrase back to him. Local leaders throughout the country do the same in their cities and towns.

This Grito is done to commemorate the beginning of the Mexican War for Independence. It is said that the first Grito was performed by Miguel Hidalgo, a priest who rang the bell of his little church in the early hours of September 16, 1810. In doing so, he rallied the people together to fight for independence. Many cite his cry as the kickoff to the revolution, which eventually led to Mexico's freedom from Spain.

We spent the night of the 15th at home this year. In the past, we have headed out to watch the Grito and fireworks or go to Independence parties. However, with a one-year-old and another baby almost here(!), I didn't feel like tromping around at midnight, even for the Independence celebration. Maybe next year we'll venture out ;).
