January 6th is known as Día de los Reyes (King's Day) here in Mexico. To celebrate, every year that we're around, we've joined in a rosca celebration along with most of the country.
Rosca refers to a sweet bread made in the shape of a wreath (like the one pictured above). On the sixth of January, stores are well stocked with these breads. Usually, a small plastic figurine representing baby Jesus is baked inside of the bread.
This year, I went to the story on January 6th and found small, individual roscas. How fun, I thought, and picked up four for our family -
We told the girls the story of Epiphany while we ate the bread, and then looked for baby Jesus. Unfortunately, the small ones didn't have a Jesus inside of them. Oops.
The next day I took the girls back to the store and picked up a bigger rosca, one that I was pretty sure would have the baby Jesus Trinity had so diligently looked for the night before.
She dug in...
and found him!
Here's a closer look at the baby Jesus in our rosca -
Hope you all had a wonderful start to the Epiphany season. We're getting settled at home once again after being away, and getting ready for Trin to head back to school on Monday (most schools here wait until after King's Day to restart classes after the holiday break).
